5 everyday habits that protect your enamel
Enamel is the hardest substance in the human body — but it's not indestructible. Once it wears down, it's gone for good. The good news: a few small habits make a real difference.
1. Wait before you brush after eating or drinking
Acidic foods and drinks (citrus, soda, wine, coffee) temporarily soften enamel. Brushing right away can wear it down faster. Wait about 30 minutes, or just rinse with water in the meantime.
2. Use a soft-bristled brush — and don't scrub
A firm brush and heavy pressure feel more "thorough," but they actually erode enamel over time. Soft bristles and gentle, circular motions clean just as well.
3. Watch the snacking, not just the sugar
Constant grazing keeps your mouth in an acidic state most of the day. It's often less about what you eat and more about how often — try to give your mouth breaks between meals.
4. Don't skip fluoride
Fluoride actively helps re-mineralize weakened enamel. A fluoride toothpaste, and in some cases a fluoride rinse we can recommend, is one of the easiest wins available.
5. Get a nightguard if you grind
Nighttime grinding (bruxism) can wear through enamel surprisingly fast, often without you realizing it's happening. If you wake up with jaw soreness or notice flattened teeth, ask us about a custom nightguard.
None of these require a lifestyle overhaul — just a few small swaps that add up over years, not days.
